Description   The laws of kashruth practiced by observant Jews are reduced to their simplest form in this rhyming picture book aimed at an Orthodox audience. The characters in the large, brightly colored illustrations wear modest clothing, head coverings, and the younger brother wears payes (earlocks) appropriate for this level of observance. As with other books by this publisher, the pages are slickly coated so that they can be wiped down after they are handled. The unnamed children in the story imitate their family's kosher practices by separating milk and meat products in their play kitchen. As the children accompany their mother on her neighborhood errands, they visit a kosher butcher, a fish store, and a pizza store all of which facilitate the explanation of what distinguishes kosher from non-kosher food. The book also explains the category of "pareve," or neutral foods (vegetables and fruits) which can be served with any meal. The repetitive refrain, "keeping kosher every day means eating in a special way," enables young listeners to join in the reading of the book.
